When I was a bike shop mechanic in 1996, I decided to build up a titanium mountain bike using as many titanium components as I could find. The resulting bike started with a Kona Hei Hei bare frame, welded at the Sandvik factory in Eastern WA state. The bike ended up with one major non-titanium part, a Ritchey black chrome front fork, and a few minor accessories that are not available in titanium.
This one-of-a-kind classic has the following components:
Hand built wheels with titanium Summit sealed bearing hubs, Wheel Smith s.s. spokes on Mavic M231 rims. The rear Summit hub has one grease zerk port for the non-freehub, sealed bearing side, rebuildable gear cluster side with Shimano Dura-Ace bearings on a titanium axle.
(One spare rear, hand built rear wheel, the on same Mavic rim and spokes, Nuke Proof sealed bearing hub, 7 speed 13-30 is included).
New Schwalbe 26X1.50 Marathon Plus tires and Presta tubes.
XT front and rear derailleurs, Sedis chain with new rear 7 speed cluster 13-28 with Shimano freehub.
Ritchey crank arms installed on TNT titanium axle bottom bracket, four sealed bearings. New chain rings 46-36-26, titanium bolts, Ritchey clipless pedals.
Kona titanium stem & bar, American Classic oversized headset, aircraft sealed bearings. Seven speed Sachs grip shift.
Titanium seat post and titanium rail seat.
XT front brakes, Avid rear brakes, titanium bolts, Ritchey pads (extra set of new pads included)
Blackburn rear rack, Zefal front fender, Bluemels rear fender.
Frame has no dings, or dents. Kona down tube decal is somewhat delaminated from bike stand clamping. No rust. Bike is very light weight and fast. Includes extra wheel plus other appropriate and related bike components such as brake pad set, extra bottom bracket, set of Grease Guard Suntour pedals with clips and straps, brand new.
